Key Bounce Doesn't Go Aztecs' Way

April 3, 2001

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - A bad-hop single off the bat of USC shortstop Seth Davidson scored Trojan third baseman Michael Moon in the top of the 10th inning to give USC a 2-1 win over San Diego State on Tuesday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The Aztecs fell to 19-12 overall on the year, while the Trojans improved to 21-11.

SDSU starter Ben Julianel threw nine innings of one-run ball, with the lone run coming on an RBI-infield single in the fifth inning. Julianel struck out seven Trojan batters and walked only one before exiting after the ninth with the score tied at one.

Reliever Mike Garber came on to allow a single to Moon to start the 10th. After a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Rob Garibaldi, Moon found himself on second with one out. Davidson then came up and hit a routine grounder to SDSU second baseman Ryan Wilson that took a bad hop and bounced off Wilson's shoulder into short left field, scoring Moon with what would amount to the game-winning run.

For the second consecutive week, USC threw their top pitchers at the Aztecs, and the Trojan quartet of Rik Currier, Anthony Reyes, Mark Prior and Brian Bannister combined to limit SDSU to two hits.

The Aztecs return to Mountain West Conference action this weekend when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a three-game series against Air Force beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday.
